  3. Audio and text on my 外書講読 page.  If you use this page to study, write a little about what you did on Lang-8.

2年次以降の演習

国際経済学科の1年生は10月から11月にかけて2年次以降の演習の応募申請をすることになっています。今日はその関連の資料を配り、説明をしました。重要な連絡事項ですのですが、今日は数名の欠席者にいました。欠席者には教務課で資料等について問い合わせてほしいと思います。

2年時以降の演習に関する説明を終えてから、1446のパソコン室に行き、私のゼミの「選抜基準」というページを拠点に、Lang-8で英語を書く練習をしました。

Writing an outline

At the beginning of each semester in this class, I have everyone do three things.  First, I have each of you interview another member of the class.  Next, I have you make an outline in which you organize some of the information you got in that interview.  Finally, I have each of you give a presentation in class in which you use your outline to introduce the person your interviewed to everyone else.   I hope that this will help you make new friends as you learn how to write an outline and make a presentation.

First, I'd like to talk about the word "outline."   The word "outline" is made up of two simple words: "out" and "line."  When people are talking about drawing, an "outline" refers to a simple illustration that shows the shape of the outside of something with a few lines.  An outline drawing doesn't have a lot of detail.  It just gives you a basic idea of what you are looking at.

When people are talking about writing, the word "outline" refers to something that gives you a basic idea of what is being talked about but doesn't show a lot of detail.  In class, I will show you an example of an outline.  The example will have two or three main topics and each topic will have a few points.   The outline that you write should look like the example.

Find a podcast

今日は下の動画を参考にして、気に入ったpodcastを見つけて、Lang-8でそのpodcastのどこがいいかなどについて英語で書いてください。

最初にiTunesというソフトを見つけてください。iTunesを起動してから、ビデオの説明に従ってpodcastを探すことがとできると思います。

English Garden

Today we went to the English Garden in the library.  Everyone borrowed one easy book to read.   If you missed class you should go to the first floor of the library, find the English Garden, and borrow an easy book to read.

After that, we went to the computer room (1446) to practice EnglishCentral.

Next week, after Honoka's introduction, we will return to the computer room and you will write about the book that you borrowed. Here is an example of how to begin writing about your book:
I read a book called “Mia the Bridesmaid Fairy” by Daisy Meadows (Orchard Books,  2009).  It is about . . .

Presentations

We began our presentations today.  I think everyone did very well.  Everyone who did not give a presentation today should be ready to give their presentation next week.  Please start writing your outlines (レジメ) on the blackboard before class starts.  If we have enough time after the presentations, I would like to take everyone to our computer room to work on Lang-8.  If there isn't enough time, I think I'll take everyone to the library to pick out an easy book to read from the English Garden.

今後の予定について

今日はいつもの教室でWhat did you do over the weekend?や2年以降のゼミの選び方などについて話した後に、パソコン室(1446)に行って、Lang-8を使わせました。今日、quizをしようと思っていましたが、来週(5月31日)まで延期することにしました。quizの範囲はMama Crowに関するものになります。テキストを読むだけでなく、音声も繰り返し聞いた上でquizを受けてほしいことを改めて伝えました。

今の予想では、6月7日ごろからゼミの仲間を箇条書きのレジメ(outline)で紹介してもらいます。その準備の一つとして、紹介の際に使いたいような英語の言い回しをLang-8で添削してもらっておいてください。

Today we heard a couple of crows making a lot of noise near our house. Then, Mariko heard a noise by our backdoor where we keep our trash. She took a look and found this crow sitting on top of the trash can. It seemed to be struggling so I thought it had gotten caught in the netting in back of the can. I got some gloves to protect my hands and picked up the lid to see if I could help it to get free. To my surprise, it didn't try to fly away. I slid it off the lid onto my glove where it seemed remarkably content.

Meanwhile, two other crows seemed quite upset about what was going on. We think that the two crows are the parents and that the crow we found on our trash can may be too young to fly.

We put it down and then it hopped to our front yard and climbed up a tree. It hasn't moved from the tree for several hours and the parents continue to keep watch.

I think this has been a hard Mother's Day for Mama Crow. Like many mother's and father's she can't help but worry about her offspring -- even after they've gotten pretty big.

In this video I'll show you how to use Lang-8.

First, click on "Learn for Free!" Type your e-mail address here and click on "send." I recommend that you use an e-mail address that you can use on a personal computer. I think you should avoid using a mobile phone e-mail address unless you have a smart phone that lets you view ordinary web pages. Soon after you send your e-mail address, Lang-8 will send an e-mail to you. Open the e-mail and click on the address. If you cannot click on the address, copy it and then paste it into your internet browser. If you cannot read the Japanese in the e-mail from Lang-8, don't worry. Just copy the address you see and paste it into your browser.

Now you can type in your profile. If you want to, you can change the interface language here. The "nickname" is the name that people will see on the internet. It can be part of your real name or any name you choose. Please type your nickname in English letters, not Japanese. Choose the year you were born, your native language, your home country, your gender, and the language your are studying. If you are watching this video in Japan, choose Japan here and change the time zone to Tokyo. You can choose any combination of letters and numbers you like to make your password. Make a note of your password and be sure not to loose it. You can adjust your privacy settings here and then finish the registration process by clicking this button.

Now that you have a Lang-8 account, you can write something in English about yourself. Click on "write" and type a message. Please don't copy the expressions you see on the screen. Write your own unique message. In this class, it is very important that your message be open to all internet users.

After you have written your first message, send me the address of your Lang-8 page in an e-mail. First, click on your nickname. Then, copy the address in your browser. In a new e-mail, type my e-mail address in the "To" line, your own name (not the letters you see on this screen) in the subject line, and paste the address in the body of the e-mail. Then, click on "send."

Lang-8 is a site where people can help each other learn. If you want other people to help you, you should make friends by helping other people. To do this, click on "Lang-8"and then click on "Entries awaiting your corrections." I'll look at this one to see if I can help him. This "の" should not be here. "所在ない" seems a little strange here. I'll change that to 退屈をしていました。 Now, I'll type a personal message to him and then click this button. I see that I forgot to type the kanji for 退屈 so I'll click "correct"and fix my mistake.

If you correct the entries of people you meet on Lang-8, I'm sure that some of them will help you. After someone corrects something you have written be sure to thank the person and look at what they have written to see if you can help them.

Lang-8で日記を書いていますが、「Correct someone's Japanese」がまだの人が多いようです。添削をまだやっていない場合にはは次のように corrections made が 0 になります。

今日と最終回

今日は1445教室で授業をしました。次の予定をホワイトボードに書きました。

時間が足りず、EnglishCentralまではできなかった人が多かったですが、次回(最終回)にその続きをしたいと思います。直接1445教室に行ってください。
